Evaluation Report & Public Engagement

The inaugural Toronto Biennial of Art, held from September 21 to December 1, 2019, was a new international contemporary visual arts event that brought 72 days of free visual arts programming to the city. Bespoke to conduct evaluation that captured the impact the Biennial made in its first year. The final evaluation report addresses and assesses five core impact touchpoints which include: (1) building a legacy of more inclusive artistic representation, (2) creating international visibility for the city as a cultural destination, (3) the social, community and individual contribution the Biennial made, (4) the vibrant ecosystem of partnerships it put in place as well as (5) its economic impact for the creative work force and city.

As part of this work, Bespoke collected and synthesized data from stakeholder interviews, focus groups, public and artist surveys, person-on-the-street intercepts, conducted precedent research and estimated the economic impact using the Tourism Regional Impact Model (TREIM). In addition to this we provided the Biennial team with a series of recommendations for strengthening the Biennial in its next iteration.
